EndNote

A step by step guide on how to use EndNote

Importing references from a text file

Saving references in a text file and importing them into EndNote using an import filter is the best option if:

  • A direct export option is not available for your chosen database
  • A direct export option is available but you are using a computer that does not have EndNote installed

There are two steps involved in using the import option:

  • Save your references in a text file in a format compatible with EndNote
  • Import the text file into EndNote using the correct filter

Example using The Cochrane Library

  • In your browser go to http://www.thecochranelibrary.com
  • Perform a search and select the references for export
  • Click Export Selected Citation(s) and the Export Options dialog box will open
  • Select the format RIS (EndNote)
  • Click the Download button
  • In EndNote go to File>Import>File and navigate to your saved text file
  • Select Cochrane Library as your Import Option and click the Import button

Import filtersare available from the EndNote website. These are files used by EndNote to transfer references previously downloaded from an online database and saved as a text file. Save files in C:\Program Files\EndNote\Filters.
