A step by step guide on how to use EndNote

Direct export form online search tools

Most websites and databases contain a direct export/download button that will send your search results directly to EndNote. A few examples are listed below.

Exporting from Scopus

  • Have your EndNote Library open.
  • In Scopus select the references you want. To select a record you need to tick the box beside that record
  • Click on the Export link at the top of the search results
  • Select the EndNote (RIS) option and click Export
  • Click on the downloaded file and this will import it into EndNote

Exporting from Web of Science

  • Have your EndNote Library open
  • In Web of Science select the references you want. To select a record you need to tick the box beside that record
  • Click on the Export link at the top of the searches
  • Select the EndNote desktop option
  • Click on the downloaded file and this will import it into EndNote

Exporting from databases via the Ovid platform

  • Have your EndNote library open
  • Select references by ticking the box on the left hand side of the results
  • Click on the Export link in the menu above the displayed results
  • A pane will appear on the right hand side of the browser. In the Format drop down menu select EndNote. In the Fields drop down menu you can select how much of the database record you want to export. Complete Reference is recommended.
  • You may wish to untick the URL box. This just adds a URL link to the Ovid record.
  • Click the Export button at the bottom of the pane to export the results

Exporting from PubMed

  • Have your EndNote Library open. Then in your browser go to PubMed
  • Perform a search, select references by ticking the boxes on the left of the references
  • Click on the Send to button above the list of results and select Citation manager and click Create file to export the references to EndNote

Exporting from Engineering Village

  • Have your EndNote Library open.
  • In Engineering Village select the references you want. To select a record you need to tick the box beside that record.
  • Click on the Download icon at the top of the searches.
  • Select the EndNote (RIS, Ref. Manager) option
  • Click on the downloaded file and this will import it into EndNote

Exporting from Cochrane Library

  • Have your EndNote Library open.
  • In Cochrane Library, select the results you wish to export by clicking the box on the left hand side
  • Clcik on the Export selected citation(s) option at the top of the search results
  • Seelct RIS (EndNote) and click on the Download button. This will generate a export RIS file
  • Ensuring your EndNote library is open, click on the RIS file to export into the EndNote library

Exporting from EBSCO databases

To export results you need to move all the results from the page into the folder first.

  • Click on share at the top of the results and click on the top results option to add to the folder. Remember, the default number of results on a page is 30, but you can change this (up to 50) by clicking on the page options link at the top of the results

  • Click on the folder icon at the top of the page.

  • Click Select all and choose export from the right hand column
  • Choose Direct Export in RIS Format and then import that folder into EndNote

Exporting from Google Scholar

  • Have your EndNote Library open
  • In Google Scholar, click on the menu icon showing 3 bars at the top left of the page.
  • Click on Settings at the bottom of the menu
  • Under where it says Bibliography manager select the Show links to import citations into and choose EndNote from the drop down menu and click Save
  • You will then see a Import into EndNote option under each search result

Please note that unless you have a Google account, you can only export 1 search result at a time.

 

Exporting results in bulk with a Google account

  • In Google Scholar ensure you are signed in to your Google account.
  • Run your search and then select the results you want to export by clicking on the star at the bottom left of each search result. You can click through futher pages to add results. This will add the results to My Library
  • Once you have selected all your results click on My Library at the top right of the page
  • Click on Export all that sits above the search results and choose EndNote which will then generate an export file
