Getting Started with Mendeley

How to register for a Mendeley account

  • Visit the Mendeley.com website and click on Create account
  • Enter your email: Use your personal email address (not Imperial email) and click on Continue
  • Download the Mendeley Reference Manager app (optional): After creating your account, you will be prompted to download the Mendeley Reference Manager app.

Access on library PCs: If you want to use Mendeley on a library computer, go to Mendeley.com and log in with your Mendeley username and password.

NOTE: Mendeley is not affiliated with or supported by Imperial ICT, so please avoid creating an account with your Imperial credentials.

Mendeley allows you to insert citations and references from your library into your Word documents. You can format your document in a citation style of your choice, such as Harvard, Vancouver, IEEE, and others. Mendeley is compatible with both the desktop and online versions of Microsoft Word.

How to install the Mendeley add-in:
  • Open Microsoft Word: Launch MS Word and find the Add-ins button.
  • Get Mendeley Cite: Click on Get add-ins, search for Mendeley Cite, and once found, click Add.
  • Log in: When the Mendeley Cite panel opens, click on Get Started and log in to your Mendeley account.

Access on library PCs: If you are using a library's PC, you might be prompted to sign in via your organisation. Ignore the prompt asking you to reconfirm your institution. Instead, click on Try another way and log in with your personal email account.

Transition to Mendeley Reference Manager

Mendeley Reference Manager is a new desktop application that is in process of replacing Mendeley Desktop. 

  • Downloading Mendeley Desktop: The application is still available to download, however, is no longer updated as off September 2022. Please see the Mendeley FAQs for more details: Can I still install Mendeley Desktop?
  • Using both apps on one PC: you can have both applications installed on your computer at the same time
  • Syncing References: If you continue using the older Desktop version, your references will still sync via Mendeley.com whenever you sync your library.
