Ovid databases guide

Most of imperials medical databases are run by ovid. This libguide will show you how to search them.

Displaying results

Results are listed in groups of 100 but this can be adjusted by clicking on results per page at the top of the results. The minimum number is five articles and the maximum is 100.

You can choose how much of the reference you want to see in the results list by clicking on the lines next to view. To just see the title click on the 1 line, 2 lines shows the citation and 3 lines shows the abstract.

Screenshot showing the toolbar at the top of results where you can say whether you want to see the abstract and how many results you want to see on a page.

You can use the left hand column to refine your results. Especially useful are the Year and Publication Type options. You can also use it to sort your results. By default, Ovid sorts results so that the most recent articles are first. Click on the arrows to see the options for each criteria.

Click on the title in order to see the detailed record about the article including the subject headings. When you are viewing this record you can also click on the names of any of the authors to see other work they have published.

To view the full article, click on the Full Text or Find at Imperial links to the right of the reference on the results page. Just because a reference does not give the option of Full Text does not mean that Imperial does not have immediate access to that article, it may be supplied by someone other than Ovid.

The Find at Imperial link can also be found in the right hand column within the detailed record. It will take you through to Library Search. If we do not subscribe to the appropriate journal there will be a link to order the article as a Document Delivery request and the details of the article will be filled out for you on the request form.
